Tons of love has gone into Journal throughout the years

Annesi Sophia Furman, babası ise Prof. James Jay Mapes’tir. Çocukluğunda eğitimini özel öğretmenlerden aldı. 1851’de avukat William Dodge ile evlendi.
1859’da babasına iki tane dergiyi basmasına (The Working Farmer, United States Journal) yardımcı olmak için yazar ve editör olarak işe girdi. Birkaç yıl sonra yazdığı hikâyeleri “The Irvington Stories” isimli kitapta topladı. Kitap Mary Mapes Dodge için büyük bir başarı oldu. Daha sonra ise Dünya Klasiklerinden biri sayılan “Gümüş Patenler”i yazdı. Sonraki yıllarda birkaç derginin editörlüğünü yaptı. Çocuklar için çıkardığı dergisi “St. Nicholas Magazine” en başarılı dergilerden biri oldu. 1905’te öldü ve New Jersey’de gömüldü.
